In the light of the recent recession and despite a federal worker pay freeze, some would appreciate the stability and the security of a government job. I can shed a little light on the process of obtaining such a position and help with your job search.

 The first step in searching for your government job is to visit the website usajobs dot com. This is the website that all of the federal departments advertise their job openings. The job openings on this are searchable by location, keywords, and series code. Begin by searching by keywords to locate the job you are interested in. The keyword search should bring up a list of available openings. It is important to notice the series code. This is how all federal positions are categorized. The series code should be a four digit code in the middle of the position classification (e.g. GS-XXXX-01, where XXXX is the series classification code). You can use this series code for future job searches to make your results more specific.

 Create an account on usajobs and keep a resume on file there. You will be able to apply to job announcements from the announcement itself. There are announcements that are always open. You can recognize these announcements by their vacancy number, it will be four to six digits. You will want to apply to these jobs under your series code to keep an active resume on file, should a job open and the hiring official decide to pull a list of names.

 The open job announcements will have a long vacancy announcement number. It varies by department, but could be as long as fifteen digits. You can apply for these positions directly from the announcement.

 The announcements will have a list of qualifications and duties listed. Make sure that you are qualified for the position that you are applying for. Most announcements list the education required for that position, but they may also list the experience that they are looking for or that they will except in place of education. Education and experience is something that you can expound upon while you are creating your resume. There are also other factors such as military history and specific data that show you are the person that they are looking for.

The Building Inspector Training Process

You will have a number of responsibilities if you are a building inspector, as you will examine commercial and residential properties. This is an important position that makes sure buildings are up-to-code. However, it isn’t something you can just walk into, as you need to gain the proper certification. In most states, this position requires a post-secondary education and several years of building inspector training.

A building inspector will inspect the “guts” of various types of buildings. a) Make sure they are hiring, and hiring soon.
A lot of employers, especially smaller companies, put out jobs to test the waters, gather resumes, or hire someone if it’s a perfect match. But, they are content with not making any hires.

b) DO work with temp agencies.
Do not rate the jobs offered by temp agencies as below the ones offered by employers directly. There is a reason why there are so many temp agencies around, they actually do help people find jobs. Keep in mind that temp agencies most always place people on full-time jobs only, not part-time.

c) Exercise discretion with Craigslist
Since the fee to post jobs on Craigslist is very low or free, there are a lot of spam jobs posted. Jobs that are simply to collect resumes, or are part of some kind of scam. This is not to say there are no good jobs on Craigslist at all, but there are a higher number of spam jobs there than on other sites.

d) Longer resumes are better
Having looked over hundreds of resumes myself, I can tell you that longer resumes look more impressive. It’s beneficial to include a fuller description of your previous positions and your education credentials.

e) Include Keywords, and lots of them, in your Resume
When employers search resume databases, they search for keywords. Usually searches are ranked by the number of keywords in a document. In other words, if an employer searches for “nurse”, the resume that comes up number one has the highest number of the word “nurse”. So, if you are a nurse, it’s helpful to mention that as many times as possible.

Job Websites are Ineffective – The Real Truth How to Use the Internet for a Job Search

In a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Joe Light sheds some light on how companies intend to use the internet to find talent in 2011.

Light explained that most companies plan to use network profile boards such as LinkedIn prior to even posting a position. They also plan on using trained headhunters versus paper-pushers that simply collect applications from third party job boards. The reason they will not have need for these clerks is they plan on using the internet job boards much less then in recent years.

trans.gifMr. Light stated a number of approximately 24% of companies plan on using job websites less than in previous years. These companies wish to find the talent earlier and before their competitors do.

With these changes in position, it also changes the position that job searchers should take in their hunt. Though I do not recommend not using the job boards, I do suggest the use should be ancillary to a different positioning strategy for job seekers. People should establish their own presence on the internet that feeds the rest of their marketing.

In an internet job search strategy, you need an anchor or a pillar that is the nucleus of your search. Though some suggest this to be LinkedIn, I suggest you go one level deeper and open a personal web page.

Personal Web Page

With a personal web page, anyone searching for a job can be found on the internet. As an individual moves through the web, making comments or discussing aspects that they are passionate about, they can link all back to their web page. These small stamps end up being keywords that can, and will, be searched by employers.

By simply adding a personal web page url in your signature block that is used on forums and discussion boards, people will be able to track the comments. When you make comments about relative topics within your profession or discipline, these become hits for keywords on every search engine out there.

The personal web page should be used as a blog. The one page document should show a basic overview with background and desires. Writing and submitting articles to related news directories, agencies, and blogs will prove your competency and call attention to you as a professional in your field.

If you are unemployed or underemployed, why not call attention to that? Some say it is negative but I think anything that can call positive attention to you should be used. Creating posts about your struggle to find a job is very interesting reading for all of those that have not applied a face to the unemployed and underemployed epidemic in the US and the world.

With my years of experience I will state to you that a good headhunter does not want you to develop a strong presence on the internet.  What they want to do is to create an ownership over the better talent in their market.  For this to happen, they need to know who you are and for others to not know.

A good headhunter will find you no matter if you have a public presence or not.  Your public presence on the internet is for you to be visible and not to appease recruiters.


Once you have established your personal web page, you then branch out all that you wish to use. LinkedIn is a great choice. Remember though that LinkedIn is not a fully open source of names. The names that are available to users are those within a hierarchy stretching out. If you are not within this group available to an employer then they will not see you and you cannot see them.

Joining groups in LinkedIn helps your reach immensely. Join groups related to your profession such as industry and discipline interest groups. Avoid the job search groups. The people collecting names in these groups will find you anyway. Make comments in the group discussions and relate to articles you have posted on your personal web page. Hyperlinking out will be great.

Twitter Away

Tweeting on Twitter is quite the rage. Professional athletes are doing it at games. Celebs are saying what they ate for dinner. I say tweet away but keep professional and focused. Share a bit of your personality but relate to your articles and personal web page every day.


Most recruiters and companies feel that Facebook is more of a personal profile network. Does this mean they do not look for people there? Not at all. Make sure you put what you do in your profile and link to your personal web page. I still suggest keep Facebook personal between you and friends and family. Just remember people are watching.

Job Sites

I suggest posting on them. I suggest applying to jobs on them. I just do not suggest putting much weight in what they will give you in result. Instead focus your energy in other areas.

Seek and Search

Use the internet to find people. Use it to make contact. Instead of making friend link, find possible and probable hiring authorities and watch what they post. If you can do some good research on the internet and get in touch with where they hang out, you will have opportunities in no time.

Do Not Ask for a Job

If you are unemployed or underemployed, it is good to let people know you are searching for an opportunity but it is never good to ask for a job. Making “I need a job” posts is counterproductive to your effort. Instead post about what you know in a positive and strong position. If you post something of interest to someone, they will click on the link back to your web page and will see that you are open to opportunities.
